CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team defeated DePaul, 4-0, for the second time this season to earn third place at the 46th HEB Tournament of Champions.
The No. 64 Broncos (12-5) made quick work of the Blue Demons (6-11) with four singles wins to finish 2-1 at the weekend Spring Break tournament.
The match started with singles and junior Brad Noel put the Broncos on the board, 1-0, with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Mathias Hambach, followed shortly by junior Casey Cullen with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Vanja Grgec.
Junior Michael Calderone had to go three sets, but picked up his first win of the tournament with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Bartosz Jozwiak at No. 1 and then junior Kazuya Komada clinched the match by out-lasting Matija Palinic 7-6 (6), 6-4 at No. 2 singles.
The Broncos are off until March 15 when they begin defense of their three-straight Mid-American Conference championships against Chicago State at 1 p.m. at West Hills Athletic Club. Later that day, WMU has a non-conference tilt against Ferris State at 6 p.m.
