KALAMAZOO -- The No. 59 Western Michigan men's tennis team completed a doubleheader sweep, 7-0 and 7-0, of Chicago State and NCAA Division II No. 44 Ferris State on Monday afternoon at West Hills Athletic Club.
The Broncos (14-5, 1-0 MAC) opened the day with their 25th consecutive victory against Mid-American Conference competition by taking down the Cougars (0-7, 0-1 MAC). WMU won all but one game against the under-manned MAC newcomers.
WMU came back against one of Division II's top teams in the late afternoon, but improved to 24-4 all-time against the Bulldogs (3-5) with the victory.
WMU took a pair of 8-1 victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles on the way to the tandem sweep to set the tone early.
The Broncos came back to win all but six games in the six first sets on the way to victory.
Senior Michael Calderone won all four matches to pass three players and move into 17th all-time at Western Michigan with 161 career wins.
Casey Cullen won all three of his matches to become the third player on the team and 36th in school history with 120 wins or more (121), with Kazuya Komada (124) and Calderone.
By winning all 18 matches, the Broncos improved to 82-28 in dual match singles and 34-17 in dual match doubles in 2010.
The Broncos are off until March 26 with a home doubleheader against No. 52 Minnesota at 1 p.m. and UIC at 6:30 p.m. The Broncos host Atlantic 10 champion Xavier on March 28 at noon.
