WMU vs. ND 2/6/2010 Quotes

Head Coach Jim Culhane:

On Riley Gill's performance:

"I think the game can be summarized by the outstanding goaltending of Riley Gill. I think he has been tremendous throughout his senior year and I think the goaltending tonight is some of the best in my memory I've ever seen at Lawson Ice Arena. Riley was fantastic. I'm happy for the guys to get the sweep. The penalty-kill was fantastic and our best penalty-killer was Riley."

On the penalties in the third period:

"As I said to the team, the way we got the win in the third period, I'm not happy with that. But, at the end of the day, we won back-to-back games against an outstanding program. Jeff Jackson's teams are always well prepared. They gave us a real good effort tonight. They lost last night 7-2 and I thought we matched the intensity, we matched their competitiveness. Again, I think Riley was just outstanding."

On the special teams:

"We were able to execute on our special teams. We scored some power-play goals here, a couple tonight, a couple last night. We did a great job killing penalties. Hard fought all weekend long, and that's great to see the guys score, as we've talked about, our challenges this year scoring goals. Seven last night, four tonight, is real positive for our team and sweeping an opponent is something we can be pleased with."

On the play of Derek Roehl the last two nights:

"I thought the way Derek saw the puck was exceptional. A couple goals here tonight, I think he had an assist and did a lot of good things in the offensive zone. We looked to Derek to contribute offensively for us. Good weekend on the offensive side of the puck."

Forward Derek Roehl:

On predicting his hat-trick:

"We were talking about it before today's game and yesterday's game and I was like yeah, I'm gonna get a hat trick tonight. There's no excuses. It's funny how it works out. It felt good."

"It was a great feeling, you know, it was the first one of my career. It wasn't the prettiest one, but we'll take it."

On Notre Dame's effort:

"They came out harder tonight. They adjusted to our breakout and that eliminated our odd-man rushes, which was a big part of our game last night. We just needed to adjust to that a little tonight."

On scoring 11 goals over the weekend:

"We definitely needed that. We haven't really gotten a lot of bounces, this weekend we did, it felt good and it was a lot of fun."

"We're just going to come back Monday, take tomorrow off to rest up with the guys that are hurt and banged up and Monday we'll start gearing up for Northern Michigan."

Goaltender Riley Gill:

On facing 55 shots:

"They were coming at us pretty good, with a lot of the penalties we had. We kept them out. It's nice to get a sweep, it's the first in awhile in CCHA play. It's a good confidence builder going into the rest of the season here."

"I think those are two of the extremes, but somewhere in the middle is ideal. Some nights you get 16 shots, other nights you get 96 attempts and you gotta face one shot at a time and hope it just works out for the best."

On the penalty-kill:

"It was really good tonight, blocking shots and clearing rebounds. Getting some clears were huge. I think a problem for us in the past has not been getting clears, so I think we did a good job of that tonight. They didn't score a power-play goal, so a pretty good percentage for us."

On scoring first:

"It's been big for us. It's something to build on. It seems like it takes awhile for us to get going, but once we get that first goal we start motoring around. This weekend we got that first goal and never looked back."
