Broncos Move Into Second Place After Shootout Win

Broncos Drop No. 14 Ferris State in Shootout

KALAMAZOO -- In his final game in front of a crowd at Lawson Ice Arena, senior goalie Riley Gill made 41 saves and a crucial stop in the shootout to give the Broncos a 1-0 shootout win after a 1-1 tie in front of 3,020 fans on Saturday Night.

Sophomore Kyle O'Kane scored WMU's lone goal in regulation after punching in a rebound on a shot by Matt Tennyson at the 14:52 mark of the first period to give WMU a 1-0 lead. The goal was the fourth of the season for O'Kane and the assist was Tennyson's seventh, with sophomore Derek Roehl tallying his sixth helper on the season.

The Bulldogs tied it up during a five-on-three power play late in the second period. Casey Haines tallied from the right circle for his 10th of the season with assists to Blair Riley and Cody Chupp. The game-tying goal was scored at the 19:35 mark. But that was the only blemish on the night for Gill, who helped kill 11 of FSU's 12 power plays, including three different five-on-three advantages.

After neither team scored in the overtime period the game was to be decided in the shootout. Head coach Jim Culhane went with an all-senior lineup for his shooters but FSU's Riley went first but could not get past Gill.  Cam Watson and Tyler Ludwig both missed their shots, while FSU's Chad Billins missed his chance to set up the final round. Senior Jared Katz took the puck from center ice and skated down in on Bulldog goalie Pat Nagle and beat him on his glove side. Chupp was the final shooter for Ferris State but Gill was able to block his shot with his left leg for his final ice time in front of the Lawson Lunatics.

The Broncos head to Fairbanks, Alaska, to battle the Nanooks in a best-of-three game series on March 5-7 for the first round of the CCHA Playoffs. Game times are to-be-determined.
