Watson Brothers Tally as WMU Ties FSU 2-2

Box Score

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Western Michigan hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with No. 14 Ferris State on Friday night at Ewigleben Ice Arena with the Ferris State winning the resulting shootout 2-0 in two rounds.

It didn't take long for either team to get on the board as Ferris State struck first at the 4:59 mark of the first period.  Kyle Bonis had the puck behind the Bronco goal-line and passed it to freshman Travis Ouellette and Ouellette one-timed it past WMU goalie Jerry Kuhn for his seventh goal of the season, giving FSU a 1-0 lead.

The Bulldog lead didn't last long at all as just 40 seconds later the Broncos tied it up 1-1. Kyle O'Kane attempted a wrap-around shot but the save was made by FSU goalie Pat Nagle. Junior Ryan Watson was positioned in front of the net and punched the puck in for his first goal of the season. O'Kane notched his third assist of the season and Trevor Elias tallied his eighth helper on the goal.

Despite two goals in less than six minutes, the goalies stepped up play for the remainder of the period to send the teams into the intermission with a 1-1 tie.

Cam Watson gave the Broncos a 2-1 lead with 4:14 remaining in the second period after redirecting a blast by freshman defenseman Matt Tennyson. WMU's Chris Clackson won a faceoff in the FSU zone and flipped the puck back to Mike Levendusky. The junior defenseman quickly passed it off to Tennyson and the big blue-liner wound up and fired a shot from just in front of the blue-line. Watson was positioned in the slot and redirected it with the shaft of his stick and past Nagle for his sixth goal of the season.

The Broncos were unable to hold the lead as FSU senior Cody Chupp scored his eighth career goal against WMU. Chupp picked off an attempt to clear the puck by a Bronco defender at the right boards in the WMU zone. He spun and fired a shot between Kuhn's leg for his eighth of the season to tie the game 2-2.

Neither team could get the jump with the remaining time plus the five minutes in overtime and the game had to be settled in a shootout. Blair Riley and Chad Billings each tallied in the shootout and Nagle stopped both attempts by Max Campbell and Kyle O'Kane to earn the extra point.

The Broncos host Ferris State for its final home game of the season on Saturday at 7:35 p.m. WMU will honor its senior class prior to the action.
