Broncos Drop 5-1 Decision to No. 5 Miami

KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan hockey team fell to No. 5 Miami, 5-1, in front of 3,380 fans Saturday on Military Appreciation night at Lawson Ice Arena.

No. 19 Western Michigan (7-4-3, 3-3-2-1 CCHA) took a 1-0 lead 9:00 into the first period on a power play goal by Danny DeKeyser. The Bronco power play was winding down when Greg Squires cycled it to DeKeyser at the top of the left circle and the freshman blasted the puck past Knapp's glove side for his second goal of the season. Squires and Max Campbell each tallied assists on the Broncos' lone goal of the game

Miami squared the game 1-1 in the final minute of the first period. Chris Wideman took a shot from the right point and it deflected off of Matt Tomassoni in the slot and past Pisellini for his second of the season. Wideman and Hartman each tallied assists as the teams went into the locker room deadlocked.

Miami put the game out of reach in the second period, netting three goals. Justin Vaive got his first of two on the night at 2:26 on the power play. Reilly Smith added a goal at the 10:28 mark and Andy Miele netted his second of the series at 16:10. The RedHawks later added a short-handed goal by Vaive at 10:20 in the third period.

The RedHawks and Broncos will meet again on Feb. 11 and 12 in Oxford, Ohio. The Broncos head to Marquette, Mich., to battle Northern Michigan this coming Friday and Saturday with both games at 7:35 p.m.
