BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The 16th ranked Western Michigan Broncos came from behind to tie Ferris State, 2-2, on an extra attacker goal by
Shane Berschbach with 41 seconds remaining in regulation and went on to beat the Bulldogs in a shootout, 5-4, in seven rounds at Ewigleben Arena on Saturday night.
Chase Balisy netted his second goal of the series and the game-winner in the seventh round of the shootout. Berschbach tallied an assist on the night to go along with the game-tying goal.
Nick Pisellini made 23 saves in to earn his first-career shootout win.
Balisy gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead at the 8:35 mark of the first period.
Kyle O'Kane took a cross-ice pass from Berschbach and brought the puck up the right side of the ice. O'Kane slid the puck into the crease to Balisy and the freshman centerman poked it through Nagle's legs for his fifth goal of the season. O'Kane tallied his second assist of the weekend and fifth of the season, while Berschbach tallied his team-leading eighth of the season.
Ferris State tied the game with less than a second remaining in the second period. Scott Wietecha threw a shot on net with Pisellini kicking the rebound out to Mike Fillinger. Fillinger spun and fired the puck into the net just before time expired. The power-play goal was his second tally of the series and the teams skated into the locker room with a 1-1 tie.
The Bulldogs took their first lead of the night at the 9:16 mark in the third period. Nate Hennig placed a perfect pass through the crease to Garrett Thompson and the freshman banged it into an open net for the 2-1 lead.
With less than a minute remaining the Broncos pulled Pisellini from the net to allow Berschbach on as the extra attacker.
Dennis Brown swung the puck to
Danny DeKeyser and the freshman defenseman found Berschbach in traffic in the slot and he punched it home for the game-tying goal.
Neither team was able to take advantage in the overtime period and the game was settled in the shootout. FSU's Chad Billins and Berschbach traded goals before Derek Graham netted a goal and
Max Campbell saw his attempt denied. With a 2-1 lead Pisellini stoned Kyle Bonis to keep WMU alive and
Derek Roehl placed the puck between an out-stretched Nagle and the post to tie it 2-2. Matthew Kirzinger made his attempt to give FSU a 3-2 lead with the pressure on Brown to tie it. The freshman defenseman brought the puck down the ice with some speed before coming to a complete stop and faking Nagle out of his skates. With Nagle flat on his stomach Brown had time take the puck and slide it into the net to tie it at 3-3.
Mike Embach and O'Kane each traded misses before Cory Kane and
Greg Squires each traded goals to force the seventh round. Eric Alexander brought the puck down on Pisellini but his back-hand attempt went wide of the net and Balisy stepped up for his chance to give WMU the win. The Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., native took the puck down the ice and went high glove-side on Nagle, shelfing it to give WMU the extra point on the weekend.
The Broncos head back to Kalamazoo to host nationally ranked Miami on Friday and Saturday at 7:35 p.m. Saturday's game will see the Broncos wear camouflage uniforms for Military Appreciation night.
