Campbell's Overtime Goal Downs Canisius, 3-2

KALAMAZOO -- Max Campbell netted a goal with 2:06 remaining in overtime to give the Western Michigan hockey team its first win of the season, 3-2 over Canisius in front of 2,094 fans at Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday night.

The Broncos surrendered a two goal lead to Canisius before entering the overtime period. WMU had a three-on-two break and Dane Walters brought the puck down the right side of the ice. Walters fired from the far tip of the right circle but Canisius goalie Dan Morrison made the initial save. The rebound kicked out to Campbell and the senior assistant captain shelved it to the left-hand corner to give first year head coach Jeff Blashill his first collegiate coaching victory. Walters and Trevor Elias each tallied assists on the game-winning goal.

The Broncos once again dominated possession and that lead to a domination of shots on goal. Western Michigan had 21 of its game-high 54 shots in the first period. At the 9:35 mark Kyle O'Kane took a pass from Chase Balisy and fired it on net. Morrison, who had a combined 90 saves on the weekend, stuffed the first shot but O'Kane banged home the rebound for his first of the season. Balisy and Luke Witkowski each picked up assists as the Broncos took a 1-0 lead.

Shortly after at the 13:10 mark Greg Squires pushed the lead to 2-0. Matt Tennyson fired a shot on net from the left point and Squires was poaching on the left-hand side of the net and punched in the rebound for his first of the season. Tennyson and Campbell each notched assists but like the previous night, WMU's two goal lead would not stand up.

Eric Rex finally got the Golden Griffins on the scoreboard at the 6:44 mark of the second period. Matt Zuke fired a shot from the left circle with WMU goalie Nick Pisellini making the save but Rex was there to clean up the rebound to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Bronco lead held until the 11:55 point of the third period when Vincent Scarsella punched in a rebound on a shot by Cory Conacher that had hit the post. The goal was the first of the season for Scarsella but his fourth point of the weekend. Conacher's assist was his second of the season and fifth point of the weekend with Matt Zuke also tallying an assist.

Pisellini made 16 saves to get the win in his first start as a Western Michigan Bronco. It was his first collegiate action since transferring from Quinnipiac mid-way through the 2008-09 season.

Western Michigan heads on the road for two weeks, traveling to Mercyhurst next weekend to battle the Lakers on Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
