BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — Darren Jones and Pat Schiffer both netted
second-half goals to help Western Michigan (6-2-1) match its win total
from last season with a 2-0 victory over host Bowling Green on Friday. The well-deserved goal by Schiffer was the first of the team captain's career.
The
win — Bronco's goalkeeper Sean Lewis' second straight shutout — makes
the Broncos undefeated in Mid-American Conference play at 1-0.
“It was a very polished away from home performance,” WMU head coach
Stu Riddle said. “We knew Bowling Green was going to be a very tough
opponent and I am delighted that we have been able to come here and not
only win, but keep our second clean sheet in a row on the road.”
Jones notched his second goal of the season with an shot from 35 yards out that curled inside the post at the 58-minute mark.
Schiffer's came just four minutes later (62:48), via a header from eight-yards deep off a Jones corner kick.
“Schiff brought us some magnificent energy and leadership off the
bench and fully deserved his goal, and Darren was a rock in the middle
of the park as well,” Riddle said.
The Broncos tied the Falcons (2-4-2, 0-2-0 MAC) in shots with 12, and Lewis recorded three saves in the match. Western Michigan returns home to host Florida Atlantic Sunday at 10 a.m.
"The
players are pleased, they can enjoy the bus ride home, and then our
focus will immediately turn to our match against Florida Atlantic on Sunday,” Riddle said.
