ANN ARBOR -- The Western Michigan hockey team fell to the University of Michigan, 6-1, on the road at historic Yost Ice Arena on Saturday night.

Michigan took a very early lead just 26-seconds in to the first period. A loose puck forced WMU goalie Riley Gill to the ground but the Wolverines took control as Carl Hagelin found Chad Langlais in the right circle. Langlais fired a wrist shot past Gill on his stick side to take a 1-0 lead. Hagelin and freshman Kevin Lynch each tallied assists.

The Wolverines extended the lead, 2-0, minutes later when Matt Rust poked in a rebound after Hagelin threw the puck on net from behind the goal. The goal was the eighth on the season for Rust and Hagelin picked up his second assist of the night and third of the series.

Western Michigan cut the lead, 2-1, at the 6:03 mark in the period on Travis Paeth's first goal of the season. Tyler Ludwig took the puck in to the Michigan zone and up to Derek Roehl. With a three-on-one advantage Roehl made a slick move and passed it to Paeth on the right side of the crease and the junior winger banged it home. Ludwig picked up his sixth assist on the goal and Roehl tallied his second helper of the season.

Michigan scored its fifth power play goal of the season 7:29 in to the second period. A.J. Treais put a rebound in to an open net after Gill made the initial save on a shot by Brian Lebler. The goal was the third on the season by Treais with Lebler and Ben Winnet picking up assists as Michigan extended its lead to 3-1.

The Broncos found themselves with a five-minute power play after Lee Moffie was ejected from the game after a hit on Jared Katz. Shortly after WMU had a five-on-three advantage after a too-many men on the ice penalty on the Wolverines. The Broncos had a solid chance on a shot from the slot by J.J. Crew, but UM goalie Bryan Hogan made the save. The five-on-three and major penalty were negated after freshman defenseman Matt Tennyson was called for charging.

Michigan extended its lead further, 4-1, with 10:09 remaining in the third period. Hagelin took the puck around the net and back-handed it above Gill's shoulder and in for his 12th goal on the season, with Lynch picking up his second assist on the night.

Minutes later Hagelin put in his second of the night in to push the lead to 5-1. A late goal by David Wohlberg made the final score 6-1.

Western Michigan has a bye week coming up and from there they head to Bowling Green, Ohio to battle the Falcons on Friday, Jan. 22 and Saturday Jan. 23.
