KALAMAZOO - The Western
Michigan hockey team was unable to find the back of the net for the second straight
night and fell at home to No. 9/10 Bemidji State, 3-0, on Sunday evening in front of 1,512 fans at
Lawson Ice Arena.
The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie in the first period with
the Beavers outshooting Western Michigan 9-7, but Bemidji State scored the
first goal of the series just 35 seconds in to the second period.
On a Bemidji power play, Ian Lowe punched in a rebound on a
shot by Brad Hunt for his eighth goal of the season. Hunt and Matt Read each
tallied the first of their three assists on the night as BSU took a 1-0 lead.
At 9:53 in the second period the Beavers extended the lead
to 2-0, again tallying on the power play. This time it was Ben Kinne
redirecting in a shot by Read for his fifth of the season and first of the
game.
The Broncos had three power-play chances in the second
period but were unable to get the puck past Bemidji goalie Dan Bakala. Bakala
made 26 saves on the night for his second-straight shutout.
Bemidji State put the nail in the coffin at 11:01 in the
third period with Kinne scoring his second of the night from just right of the
crease on a slick pass from Read.
Mike Levendusky matched his performance in yesterday's game, leading the Broncos with five blocked shots on the night for 10 in the series. Derek Roehl, Greg Squires and Kyle O'Kane each fired off four shots on net for the WMU offense.
Western Michigan restarts conference play on Friday, Jan. 8,
hosting the Michigan Wolverines at 7:35 p.m. The Broncos then travel to Ann
Arbor and historic Yost Arena for another 7:35 p.m. start on Saturday.
