Broncos Battle No. 1 Miami to the End, 2-1

Box Score

OXFORD, Ohio -- Riley Gill made a season-high 46 saves and Mike Levendusky netted his first career goal but it was not enough as the No. 1 ranked Miami RedHawks defeated Western Michigan, 2-1, in front of 3,185 fans at Steve Cady Arena on Saturday evening.

The Broncos had a few quality chances in the first period. A two-on-one chance developed midway through the period with Greg Squires leading the way. Squires brought the puck down the right side of the ice and in to the Miami zone. Trevor Elias was trailing and found a seam in the slot and Squires put the pass on his stick. Elias redirected it on net but Miami goalie Connor Knapp made the stick save.

Towards the end of the period WMU's Max Campbell nearly scored his fifth goal of the season. Chris Clackson found Campbell on the left side of the net but Campbell couldn't field the puck cleanly and banged it off the post.

After a scoreless first period, the RedHawks took the lead at 4:22 in the second period. Pat Cannone snuck one in past WMU goalie Riley Gill for his eighth goal of the season from just in front of the left circle near the crease. Carter Camper and Tommy Wingles each tallied assists as Miami took a 1-0 lead.

The Broncos tied the game up, 1-1, at 4:26 in the third period. Squires brought the puck into the Miami zone down the left side. He passed it back towards the blue line to junior defenseman Levendusky. Levendusky settled the puck before letting go a wrist-shot that beat Knapp on his glove side. The game-tying goal was the first of Levendusky's three-year career at Western Michigan and Squires tallied his 16th assist of the season and second of the series.

Miami scored the game-winning goal with 4:21 remaining in the third period. The second power-play goal on the night for the RedHawks was scored by Andy Miele from just beyond the middle of the circles. After a shot by Trent Vogelhuber caused a pile-up in front of the net with several Broncos on the ice trying to clear it out. The puck bounced back to Miele and he fired it in for his ninth goal of the season.

Gill made a season-high 46 saves on the night for the Broncos for a combined 85 saves on the weekend.

Western Michigan returns home on Feb. 5 and 6, with both games starting at 7:35 p.m., when it hosts Notre Dame. It is Hockey Cares Weekend and the Broncos will be raising money for the American Cancer Society. More information can be found at www.wmubroncos.com/hockeycares.
