Men's Tennis Opens 2010 Duals with Wins Over #74 DePaul & Detroit

KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team swept a pair of matches against No. 74 DePaul, 5-2, and Detroit, 5-2, in a doubleheader on Sunday at West Hills Athletic Club.

The Broncos (2-0) opened the day by coming from behind against the nationally-ranked Blue Demons (3-1) after losing the doubles points.

WMU rallied by winning the first five singles matches off the court in straight sets to take down DePaul. Senior Michael Calderone defeated Ben Hartman 6-3, 7-6 (4) at the top singles spot for the clinching point. The match was closely contested and WMU won 3-of-4 tiebreakers in singles.

The Broncos came back in the evening against Detroit (1-2) and took the doubles point when Casey Cullen/Pablo Olivarez fought back from 6-7 down to win, 9-7, at No. 2 doubles for the 100th victory of Cullen's career.

Western Michigan then picked up wins from Calderone at No. 2, Brad Noel at No. 4 and Michael Basha at No. 6 in the first three matches finishing to clinch the match. Michael Calderone went 4-0 on Sunday to increase his career wins to 140, 27th all-time.

The Broncos return to West Hills Athletic Club next Saturday at 9 a.m. for a tripleheader against Dayton, IPFW and Valparaiso. It will also be Bronco Kids Day at West Hills. Prizes and pizza will be provided for all kids. Bring your racquet and play with the Broncos.
