KALAMAZOO -- Sophomore
Stephanie Skowneski picked a good time to net her first goal of the season as she scored the game-winning goal with 57 seconds remaining to give the Western Michigan women's soccer a win over Bowling Green, 3-2, at the WMU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.
With the game deadlocked 2-2 and the clock winding down to the final minute, Western Michigan (4-4-1, 1-1-0 MAC) junior midfielder
Nicole Dulyea found Skowneski in the middle of the box. Skowneski settled the ball and jostled with her defender to position herself before turning and firing the ball past Bowling Green goalkeeper Alexa Arsenault for the game-winning goal. It was the second assist for Dulyea on the day and on the season and the first goal of the season for Skowneski, who led the team with five scores last year.
"It definitely took some pressure of her back," said interim head coach
Suzie Grech on Skowneski's first goal. "We know that teams try to focus more on her but for her to score the goal at a time we really needed it is a testament to her continued work."
Dulyea had a hand in every goal for the Broncos, picking up an assist on a long strike by freshman forward
Anina Cicerone in the 23rd minute and scored on a long goal herself in the 55th minute. The goal came from straight on the net and just outside the 18-yard box. Dulyea got recieved a pass from fellow midfielder
Patrice Impelido and settled the ball before bending it in to the right corner of the net. It was a shot that many Bronco forwards had rushed in the past and sailed them over the net.
"Nicole brings a sense of calmness and composure to the midfield," said
Suzie Grech. "When we get the ball on her feet it makes the game easier for us and allows us to play to our strenghts.
The win was the first Mid-American Conference win of the season for the Broncos as well as the first of Grech's career. Senior goalkeeper
Sarah Phillips got her first win of the season in her first start since 2006.
WMU continues conference play at home on Friday against Akron at 4 p.m. and then again at home on Sunday against Ohio at 1 p.m.
