Greg Squires Named CCHA Rookie of the Month

FARMINGTON Hills, Mich. -- Western Michigan forward Greg Squires has been named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Month for the month of January on Tuesday afternoon.

Squires, a freshman right winger from White Plains, N.Y., had a point in seven of WMU's 10 games in the month of January. He finished the month with two goals and six assists for eight points to help the Broncos to a 4-4-2 record, with five of the points coming on the power play. Squires had assisted on goals in five straight from WMU's win over Alabama-Huntsville on Jan. 16, to its 6-5 loss to Northern Michigan on Jan. 30.

He had assists in three of WMU's four wins, including an assist on the game-winning goal at No. 11 Ohio State. Squires, who played his junior hockey for the Indiana Ice of the United States Hockey League, scored goals in Western Michigan's 1-1 tie with Brown and in a 2-2 tie with Ohio State, in which he assisted on the game-tying goal to help force overtime. The 5-foot-8, 170 pound forward was named CCHA Rookie of the Week for his play against the Buckeyes.

Squires currently ranks tied for seventh in the CCHA in freshman scoring with 16 points off of four goals and 12 assists.  His 12 assists places him third on the team in assists and he also comes in at fourth on the team in scoring.

Squires will look to add more points to his total and help the Broncos to more wins as Western Michigan is in action this weekend at Nebraska-Omaha with both games starting at 8:05 p.m. EST.
