Men's Tennis Falls in Closely Contested Match, 4-3, at DePaul

CHICAGO -- In a match that took almost four hours to complete, the Western Michigan men's tennis team fell to No. 75 DePaul, 4-3, at the Lakeshore Athletic Club on Friday night.

The Broncos (8-4) dropped their second match in a row, while the Blue Demons (8-1) won their 15th consecutive match at home dating back to the 2006 season.

DePaul started out by winning all three doubles matches, but not without a struggle. Michael Calderone and Zeyad Montasser tried to make a case to get back into the national rankings against No. 41 Austin Doerner and Ben Hartman, but DePaul prevailed, 9-7, at No. 1 doubles. Casey Cullen and Kevin Hayward looked to salvage a doubles win at No. 2, but lost in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (4).

Calderone came right out and got a measure of revenge against Hartman with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3, but Matija Palinic put DePaul back on top, 2-1, with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Cullen at No. 6.

The final four matches remaining would decide the match and all of them went the full three sets.

Freshman Pablo Olivarez completed his comeback at No. 5 to even the score, 2-2, with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Alasdair Graetz at No. 5 and then Hayward also recovered from losing the first set to give WMU the lead, 3-2, with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 over Doerner.

Kazuya Komada and Jose Moncade split the first two sets at No. 2, but it was Moncada who pulled away late to even the match, 3-3, with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win.

The match came down to No. 4 where Montasser took the first set, but faltered down the stretch in a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 loss to Bartosz Jozwiak that clinched the win for the Blue Demons.

The Broncos are back in action on Saturday against Northwestern at 1 p.m. ET at the Combe Tennis Center.
