Bronco Comeback Falls Short at LSSU, 7-4

SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. -- Western Michigan scored four goals in the third period but spotted Lake Superior State a 6-0 lead through the first two periods and the deficit was too much to overcome as the Broncos fell 7-4 in front of 2,043 fans at Taffy Abel Arena on Friday night, ending WMU's six game road unbeaten streak.

Lake Superior State did what it has done best in the CCHA this season and that is score in the first period. The Lakers took an early 1-0 lead just 2:58 into the first period. Nathan Perkovich took a pass from Dan Barczuk at the blue line and fired the puck from the right circle, beating WMU goaltender Riley Gill high on his stick side. The goal was the eighth of the season for Perkovich and the fifth assist for Barczuk on the season. Lake Superior goaltender Pat Inglis also tallied and assist on the goal.

Perkovich and Barzcuk hooked up again just over three minutes later. Perkovich took the puck behind the net and passed it through the crease to Barzcuk to beat Gill for his fourth of the season. Perkovich tallied his 10th assist on the season as the Lakers took an early 2-0 lead. The Laker first-period barrage continued at the 12:04 period in the period with Josh Sim pushing the lead to 3-0. Will Action dished a loose puck to Sim, who split the Bronco defense at the blue line and beat Gill low on his glove side.

A few minutes into the second period LSSU extended its lead to 4-0 on a goal by Kyle Haines. Haines was able to capitalize off of a rebound on a shot by Fred Cassiani for his second goal of the season. Just 1:10 later the Lakers went up 5-0 on a goal by Zac MacVoy in the same fashion as the Haines goal. MacVoy put in a rebound off a shot by Simon Gysbers.  Lake Superior tallied its sixth goal of the evening minutes later on the power play, with Carter Lee netting the goal for the Lakers.

With 10:50 in the second period Chris Frank fired a shot on net with Inglis making the save, but the puck bounced loose into the crease. Cam Watson was the nearest Bronco but just couldn't get a stick on it to poke it into an open net.

The Broncos had another quality chance with about five minutes remaining in the second period. Ryan Watson got a pair of shots off in front of the net but Inglis was able to make two quick saves.

Western Michigan got on the scoreboard for the first time early in the third period. Kyle O'Kane poked in a centering pass from Jared Katz for his seventh goal of the season and extending WMU's power play scoring streak to eight games. Katz tallied his sixth helper on the season and J.J. Crew picking up his sixth assist as well.

The Broncos cut the lead to four, 6-2, just two minutes later. Chris Clackson picked up the puck at center ice and led a three-on-two charge, firing the puck  between the circles. Inglis made the save but the puck bounced out and to Ian Slater, who fired it past Inglis for his fourth goal of the season. Clackson tallied his second assist of the season, with Cam Watson also tallying a helper.

Western Michigan tallied its second power play goal of the night at the 7:55 mark in the third period, cutting the lead to three. Right off the face off after the penalty was called Greg Squires fired the puck from the left circle and between Inglis's legs for his sixth goal of the season. Max Campbell and Patrick Galivan both tallied assists on the goal with Galivan extending his point streak to nine games.

Just two minutes later the Broncos netted its fourth goal in seven minutes. Chris Frank pushed the puck to Campbell, who crossed the blue line to take it into the Laker zone. Campbell passed the puck from the right circle and found Galivan in the slot, who tipped it past Inglis for his 13th of the season, cutting the lead 6-4. Campbell tallied his 10th assist on the goal and Frank notched his eighth helper.

Lake Superior State was finally able to stop the Bronco scoring streak, netting a goal at the 10:09 mark of the third period. Chad Nehring netted his sixth of the season on a pass from Perkovich to push the lead back to three, 7-4.

With 4:13 remaining in the period the Broncos had another power play chance, getting off two shots on goal but were unable to capitalize.Lake Superior State was able to keep the pressure on in the final minutes to prevent the Broncos from pulling the goaltender and gaining the extra man, to close out the game.
