KALAMAZOO -- Riley Gill made 40 saves and Patrick Nagorsen made the game-winning goal 59 seconds in to the third period as the Western Michigan Broncos defeated Lake Superior State, 2-1, in front of 2,659 fans on Military Appreciation Night at Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday.

After a scoreless first period the Broncos (5-2-1, 1-2-1-1- CCHA) lit the lamp at the  14:00 mark of the second period. Cam Watson found Ian Slater in the left circle and Slater banged home his second goal of the season and second of the series. Watson tallied his third assist of the season and senior centerman Chris Clackson also notched a helper.

The Broncos pushed to lead to 2-0 at the start of the third period. Luke Witkowski fired a shot that was redirected by Patrick Nagorsen and then off a LSSU defender. The puck went between Lake Superior goalie Brian Mahoney-Wilson's legs and in to the net. Witkowski tallied his second assist on the season and freshman froward Trevor Elias tallied his fifth assist, extending his point scoring streak to all eight games in his career.

The Broncos let in a power play goal, only their fourth surrendered on the season, at the 10:01 mark in the third. Chad Nehring banged home a rebound to cut the lead to 2-1. Zac MacVoy and Rick Schofield each tallied assists for the Lakers.

Lake Superior tried to recapture last night's magic by pulling Mahoney-Wilson with 1:05 remaining in the game. After an icing call a face-off was in the Bronco zone with 15 seconds remaining. Clackson won the draw and the Broncos killed off the remaining time for the win.

Western Michigan heads on the road to Columbus, Ohio, to battle the Buckeyes on Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m. The live streaming video of the game will be available to Bronco Insider subscribers.
