INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team defeated Butler, 6-1, at the Butler Bubble in Indianapolis on Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs (1-4) were able to win two matches, but it wasn't enough in the Broncos (5-1) first road win of the season.

Sophomore Casey Cullen and senior Kevin Hayward opened the match by taking a 9-7 decision at No. 1 doubles, but Butler answered with a win at No. 3. The doubles point came down to the nationally-ranked tandem of freshman Zeyad Montasser and sophomore Michael Calderone. The No. 33 team in the country was up to the task with an 8-6 win at No. 2 to give WMU the early advantage, 1-0.

With only four available courts, the top four positions began play and it was all Western Michigan. Sophomore Kazuya Komada missed last weekend's match against Xavier with a knee injury, but came back strong with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 to put WMU on top 2-0. Hayward followed with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 1 and Calderone clinched the match with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 triumph at No. 2 singles.

The Bulldogs were able to get on the board after winning in a superbreaker at No. 4, but Brad Noel and Cullen took the court at No. 5 and No. 6 and gave up nothing. Cullen won 6-2, 7-5 and Noel emerged victorious 6-3, 6-3 to help WMU improve to 13-0 all-time against Butler.

The Broncos make the short trip up I-65 to West Lafayette, Ind., to play the Purdue (0-1) at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Boilermakers lost at home to DePaul, 4-3, on Jan. 18.
