Broncos and Bears Skate to a 1-1 Tie at the Dodge Holiday Classic

Box Score

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Western Michigan hockey team and Brown skated to a 1-1 tie on Saturday in the third-place game at the Dodge Holiday Classic at Mariucci Arena.

Late in the second period the Broncos were on the power play. Another penalty was to be called on the Bears but before they could get the extra man on the ice freshman Greg Squires fired it from the middle of the left circle and beat Brown net-minder Mike Clemente above his glove side for his third goal of the season and give WMU a 1-0 lead. Patrick Galivan and Jordan Collins assisted on the first goal of the game. The goal was the first for Squires since WMU's 6-5 overtime loss to Minnesota Duluth on Oct. 18.

Early on in the second period Brown had a 57-second five-on-three advantage, but the Broncos were able to kill off both penalties to extend its streak to 22 straight penalties killed.

Midway through the third period WMU's penalty-kill streak was ended on a power-play goal by Brown's Mike Stuart. Stuart fired a shot from just beyond the left circle to tie the game up, 1-1. Sean McMonagle and Jordan Pietrus picked up assists on the goal at 11:02.

Western Michigan had a late five-on-three advantage but it was ended by a Bronco penalty. WMU would remain on the power play after another Brown penalty, giving WMU a four-on-three advantage. Clemente would make several saves before the penalty was killed to keep the game tied.

The two teams traded shots in the first period with Brown ending the period with a 13-8 lead on shots on goal. The Broncos were able to kill off the lone penalty of the period. WMU's Sean Weaver had two shots on goal in the first period but Clemente was on his game, making eight of his 43 saves in the period.

Jerry Kuhn got the start in net for the Broncos and made 32 saves on the night, picking up his fourth tie of the season.

Western Michigan returns to conference play on Friday when they head to Big Rapids, Mich., to battle Central Collegiate Hockey Association rivalry partner Ferris State. Face off will be at 7 p.m. on Friday and Ferris State will make the return trip to Kalamazoo on Saturday evening to complete the home-and-home series. Saturday's game is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Lawson Ice Arena.
