KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team didn't drop a set in dispatching of Detroit, 7-0, and IPFW, 7-0, on Sunday at West Hills Athletic Club. In fact, the Broncos (3-0) dropped only one set combined against the Titans (0-2) and the Mastodons (0-2).
"For us to win every single match and Kevin to come through like he did puts us in a good position for this upcoming weekend, " head coach Dave Morin said. "I think we're doing a better job of taking care of business against the teams we're supposed to beat, but we still need to take care of things on our side of the net, as far as bringing the right kind of energy and intensity, playing smart and making good choices. I can still see ups and downs that we have as a younger squad, but always better to learn from a win than from a loss."
Senior Kevin Hayward won all four matches to move into a tie for 14th all-time at Western Michigan with 163 career wins, including a come-from-behind victory over Detroit's Mississippi State transfer Pjotrs Necajevs 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (8) at No. 1 singles. That's a good win for Kevin,
Sophomore Michael Calderone also won all four of his matches to reach 86 career wins as he is the next closest Bronco to reaching 100-career wins.
Sophomore Brad Noel was particularly impressive at No. 6 singles as he dropped only one game in two matches at No. 6 singles. He beat Detroit's Gino McCathney 6-1, 6-0 and IPFW's Diego Arteaga 6-0, 6-0.
The Broncos are back in action next weekend at No. 16 Michigan on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Ann Arbor and back home at West Hills against Xavier at noon on Sunday.
