KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team ended its preseason with a 1-0 win over Davenport in front of 102 fans at the Western Michigan Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.

The Broncos out shot the Panthers 58-3, with a 25-0 edge on shots on goal. The lone goal came in the 39th minute when senior captain Ashleigh Carpentier threw the ball into freshman Stephanie Skowneski. Skowneski worked her way through traffic and fired a shot from 17-yards out to beat Davenport goaltender Kristen Haight. The goal was the third for Skowneski in the preseason and Carpentier's second assist.

"I've never been associated in a game where one team took 58 shots, but we have to do a better job finishing," said head coach Mike Haines. "I am happy with everything we did up until the attacking, but we need to be able to put the game away."

Sarah Phillips and Julia Francy each played a half in net for the Broncos but neither were really tested as the Brown & Gold defense and midfield controlled the ball, preventing a single shot on net.

WMU also had eight shots hit off either the crossbar or the post, including a penalty kick by Kelsey Carmichael.

The Brown & Gold open up the regular season hosting the Cowboys of Wyoming on Friday, Aug. 22 at 11 a.m. at the WMU Soccer Complex.
