Two Former Broncos to Play for Conference Championship

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Two former Broncos have taken their successes on the football field at Western Michigan and turned them into a 12-1 season with the Kalamazoo Xplosion of the CIFL.

Kicker Brad Selent (Paw Paw, Mich.) and linebacker Chris Sheftic (Mendon, Mich.) will each be playing for the Great Lakes Conference Championship after defeating the Muskegon Thunder, 50-33, in the opening round of the playoffs last Saturday. The Xplosion will be making its second straight appearance in the GLC.

Selent, who was awarded the 2007 CIFL Special Teams Player of the Year, is the team's second leading scorer with 72 points. Wide receiver Brian Dolph leads all scorers with 14 touchdowns for 84 points. Selent has hit a field goal in 11 of the Xplosion's 13 games, and has scored at least three points in each game this season.

The Broncos' all-time leading scorer holds virtually every kicking record at WMU, including a record tying 56-yard field goal that he hit against Central Michigan in 1998. With the Xplosion, Selent has set a handful of kicking records that are sure to stand for years to come. Against the Flint Phantoms (4/19), the Paw Paw, Mich., native hit a franchise long 45-yard field goal, which is truly impressive considering the 50 yard playing field. Selent scored ten points two weeks later against the Miami Valley Silverbacks with two field goals and four extra points.

Following a bye week, the Xplosion were again pitted against the Miami Valley Silverbacks, this time at home, where the Xplosion is 14-0 all-time. When Kalamazoo saw its seven point lead go by the way side in the final minute of the fourth quarter, Selent was called upon to put the nail in the coffin. With only one second on the clock and a tied ball game, the soccer style kicker booted a 28-yard field goal through the ten foot wide uprights to win the game.

Sheftic, who played for Western Michigan in 2004 during the Bronco's 1-10 rebuilding season, has proven why he drew attention from MAC scouts coming out of Southwest Michigan powerhouse, Mendon High School. The bruising linebacker has recorded 25 tackles in thirteen games, and intercepted two passes in back-to-back weeks. The first came against the Flint Phantoms when Sheftic jumped in front of a slant route and took the ball ten yards the other way for an Xplosion score. The following week, against the Fort Wayne Freedom, Sheftic picked off a late third quarter pass inside his own red zone, and the Freedom were held scoreless for the rest of the game.

The two former Broncos will square off against the Rock River Raptors (8-5) Saturday, June 21 at Wings Stadium for the Great Lakes Conference Championship. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm, with radio coverage beginning at 7:15pm on ESPN 1660.
