Men's Tennis Sweeps Buffalo and Binghamton

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team remained unbeaten in the Mid-American Conference by taking out Buffalo, 6-1, on Saturday morning at the Village Glen Tennis Center in Williamsville, N.Y. WMU followed that up with a late evening win over Binghamton (8-8), 5-2, of the America East Conference (complete results below).

The Broncos (14-7, 2-0 MAC) started out fast by winning all three doubles matches over the Bulls (4-14, 0-3 MAC). The freshmen duo of Michael Calderone and Kazuya Komada improved to 13-5 in dual matches with an 8-1 victory at No. 3. Junior Kevin Hayward and freshman Casey Cullen played at the No. 1 position for only the second time and emerged victorious, 8-2, to move to 13-2 in dual matches and 23-2 overall this season.

Seniors Alex Birchmeier and Bryan Norville finished the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win at No. 2 to go to 10-4 in dual matches.

Norville made quick work of Alexis Lluis at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-2 to put WMU up 2-0 and Calderone was shortly behind with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Juan Carlos Wynter at No. 6 to put WMU on the verge of victory, 3-0.

Hayward moved to 10-5 at No.1 singles this season by knocking off Nikesh Singh Panthlia 6-3, 6-2 for the Broncos' fourth point of the match.

Senior Alejandro Staub tied Calderone with his 25th singles win of the season after his opponent retired at No. 4 singles and Birchmeier rounded out the scoring with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (7) win over Octavian Stane at No. 3 singles.

The Broncos are back in action next weekend on Friday in South Bend, Ind., against William & Mary and at Toledo on Sunday.
