KALAMAZOO -- The No. 65 Western Michigan men's tennis team halted its two match losing streak with a 5-2 victory over Cornell on Sunday at West Hills Athletic Club.
The Big Red (2-3) had just pulled to within one, 3-2, with a three-set win at No. 6, but on the very next point, freshman Kazuya Komada closed out his match 6-3, 7-5 at No. 3 to give the Broncos (9-3, 1-0 MAC) the win.
The Broncos started strong by sweeping all three doubles matches. Junior Kevin Hayward and freshman Casey Cullen improved their record to 18-0 with an 8-3 win at No. 2, followed by freshmen Komada and Michael Calderone with an 8-5 win at No. 3. Seniors Alex Birchmeier and Bryan Norville closed out doubles with an 8-7 (4) win at No. 1.
