RedHawks Tame Broncos, 7-3

Box Score

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- For the first time in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association weekend series, the Western Michigan Broncos did not earn a point as they fell to Miami 7-3 on Sunday afternoon at Lawson Ice Arena.

Coupled with the 4-2 lost from Saturday night, the sweep ends the Broncos five-week point streak.

Miami got the ball rolling with 4:59 remaining in the first period. Pat Cannone netted his seventh of the season to give the RedHawks a 1-0 lead. MU extended its lead 2-0 before the end of the period on Carter Camper's first of three goals on the evening.

Western Michigan answered back to make the game, 2-1, just 51-seconds into the second period. Max Campbell netted his seventh goal of the season and extended his goal-scoring streak to four games. The power play goal, only the fifth Miami has allowed all season long, was scored during five-on-three advantage. Patrick Galivan was behind the net and fed Campbell the puck to pick up his seventh assist on the season and freshman Kevin Connauton tallied his sixth helper.

Miami scored the next three goals to extend its lead to 5-1. Justin Vaive, Tommy Wingles and Camper all netted goals at the 3:08, 12:04 and 16:18 points in the period.

The Broncos cut the lead to three on a quick wrist shot by Steve Silver from the middle of the blue-line with 1:23 remaining in the second. Ian Slater passed the puck to Ryan Watson, who skated towards the circles and kicked it back to Silver. Silver's wrist shot beat Miami goaltender Connor Knapp on his glove side for his first goal of the season. Watson picked up his first assist on the season and Slater notched his first career helper on the goal.

Miami again answered less than a minute later on a goal by Gary Steffes to push the lead to 6-3 before the teams headed to the lockers.

Western Michigan opened up the scoring in the third period on a short-handed goal by Galivan. Galivan deflected an attempted pass at the blue line to produce the breakaway.  The senior skated in on Knapp and placed the puck above the goaltender's right shoulder for his fourth goal of the season. The unassisted goal was the third short-handed goal for the Broncos on the season.

Camper scored the game's final goal at the 16:57 mark of the third period to complete his hat-trick. Camper was in front of the net during a shot by Justin Mercier and put the rebound passed WMU goaltender Riley Gill, who was subbed for Jerry Kuhn to start the third period.

The Broncos also collected over 200 teddy bears during WMU's first ever teddy bear toss. Bronco fans and students tossed teddy bears on to the ice during the first intermission. The bears will be donated by the WMU hockey team to The Children's Hospital at Bronson.

Western Michigan has the week off for final exams before making the long trek to Fairbanks, Alaska to take on the Nanoonks. The Broncos and Nanooks square off on Dec. 19 and 20 with both games starting at 11:05 p.m EST.
