Riley Gill“I thought it was a fantastic effort on our part. Michigan State, 10th ranked team in the country. We played them really tough and I thought we were the better team tonight, but with the shootout rule now we were on the unfortunate end there.”
On MSU's goals in the shootout
“Yeah, they went to the same side all three times and as a goalie all three players going to the same side three different times is very unlikely. But good moves, and we obviously scored two out of the three on them. We just couldn't match their goals.”
On the third period
“I didn't have very many up until the third period, so getting into the game kind of settled me down a little bit, made me more relaxed. So I like the shots. They only had 11 going into the third, and the more shots the better in the overtime period.”
On the second goal
“Yeah, I just didn't know where it was. Then I saw it and it was going straight for the goal line and I just couldn't reach it. It's just one of those things, the bounces aren't going your way.”
“I think we just need to have another week like we did this week. We prepared very well for Michigan State and you know, the teams are just going to get tougher as the season goes on so we've just got to prepare the same way every week and hopefully we can get some wins.”
Cam Watson“I think we played hard the whole game. We got into a little penalty trouble in the second period especially, but other than that we played real hard. We got a couple bounces that we were able to capitalize on, but they're a good team.”
On what contributed to the energy
“I think its just the fans. When you come out there and you see those fans its hard not to get revved up. So I think that's a big part of it.”
On the defense
“Yeah, we had a good defense. I think our forwards were good as well. We had a ton of blocked shots tonight which is key for us to win.”
On tonight versus last night
“I think we played well both nights, but I'd definitely say tonight was a better game.”
Kevin ConnautonOn the defense
“We had a good group of guys on the back-end. We really have come together as a group of six. We all play well; we all trust each other. And that's what we need on the back end to be successful . We've got a good group of guys.”
On his first career goal
“It's pretty exciting. I was hoping it would come pretty soon here. Michigan State, back home in Canada we don't hear a lot about our school we only hear about the big name schools and Michigan State is one of them. So it's definitely good to say that I've done that, and it's pretty exciting so hopefully I can get a few more this season.”
Head Coach
Jim Culhane“Well I think I can have an opening remark and I can kind of close it right here. I will never forget tonight. The fans are unbelievable. Our student body took complete ownership in the National Anthem. I will never ever forget that. Dr. Dunn should be so impressed with our student body for them to take complete ownership of that situation that just shows the type of people we have that attend Western Michigan University. And I am just so proud of them to take complete ownership of that situation. That was something I'll never forget.”
On the shots on goal
“Just try to get pucks to the net, try to win some battles in front of the net, get some rebounds, so I think we did a nice job of that.”
On tonight compared to last night
“Very similar. Had a little bit more puck luck tonight than we did last night, but I think the effort was very similar.”
On where they go from here
“We just need to keep it under keel, not get too high, not get too low. It's a long year. And now we get ready for Nebraska Omaha. I think we cant peak and valley too much with their emotions. Our preparation will stay consistent. We didn't prepare for this weekend differently at all. It's been a consistent approach and it will be the same going in for Nebraska-Omaha.”
On Squires' goal in the shootout
“Well Greg is a very talented young man. He has tremendous offensive instincts and the shoot out is something we're continuing to work on in practice. We work on it every week and the guys have seen that move a couple times.”
On the penalties
“Yeah, it kind of got away from us a little bit. I'm disappointed with that. I think some retaliatory stuff that's unnecessary on our part, and we'll get that cured up right away.”
On the penalty kill
“First of all the best penalty killer has to be a goalie. And I think Riley brough that tonight. Another thing that's critical is blocking shots. And I thought that we took complete ownership as a team.”
