MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Central Michigan scored the games only goal with two minutes remaining in the game to beat the Western Michigan women's soccer team 1-0 at the CMU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Central Michigan served the ball into the box in the 87th minute. Erica Rohern put a shot on goal but it deflected off the crossbar. Western Michigan (2-8-0, 1-3-0 MAC) and CMU scrambled for the ball but Central's Amanda Waugh got to the ball before the Broncos could and buried it in the back of the net for the game winner.
"We played a smart game today," said head coach Mike Haines. "We were very organized and worked extremely hard, but they just got the better of us at the end. I felt like we did a lot of things right today, we just couldn't score."
The Broncos were able to hold CMU to just one goal and seven shots on net. The Chippewas had scored eight goals in the last three games before being held to just one.
One of the best chances the Broncos had on the day was a shot by sophomore Nicole Dulyea that got in behind CMU goalkeeper Shay Mannino. The Chippewas were able to clear the ball off the goal line and keep the Broncos scoreless. Freshman Stephanie Skowneski fired off four shots, landing one on net and WMU goalkeeper Julia Francy made six saves in the loss.
"We are 1-3 in the Mid-American Conference right now," commented Haines. "Five of our seven remaining conference games are at home. You need to hold serve at home and that is what Central did today. These games are going to be crucial for us and we need to get some points at home."
The Broncos host Akron on Friday at 4 p.m. and then host Ohio at noon on Sunday.
