EAST LANSING, Mich. -- After heading into the locker rooms tied, 1-1in the first period, No. 11 Michigan State scored two unanswered-goals to beat Western Michigan, 3-1, on Friday night in front of 5,283 fans at Munn Ice Arena.
Michigan State drew first blood 12:41 into the first period during a delayed penalty. A turnover in the Western Michigan (1-5-1, 0-2-1-1 CCHA) end allowed a flurry of shots to be taken from directly in front of the net. Andrew Conboy took the first shot and then Tim Crowder took two shots, picking up his second goal of the year.
With the Spartans up 1-0 a penalty was called on MSU's Ryan Turek for contact-to-the-head elbowing. Just 14 seconds into the power play the Broncos tied it up, 1-1. Max Campbell scored from between the circles on assists from Cam Watson and Patrick Galivan. The goal was Campbell's second of the season with Watson picking up his second assist and Galivan notching his third.
After a back-and-forth second period, Michigan State (4-2-1, 2-0-1-1 CCHA) took the lead, 2-1, with 50 seconds remaining in the period. Brock Shelgren passed the puck to a waiting Daulton Leveille, who put the puck into the net won WMU goaltender Riley Gill's stick side for his second goal of the season.
The Spartans extended the lead, 3-1, with 6:40 remaining in the third period. Leveille picked up his second goal of the night off a pass from Dustin Gazely. Gazely threw the puck towards the net and Leveille redirected the puck between Gill's legs.
Gill made 34 saves in the loss with MSU goaltender Jeff Lerg making 29 to best the Broncos.
The Broncos head home to host the Spartans at 7:35 p.m. on Saturday evening.
