Oatley?s Late Goal Propels Broncos Past Detroit, 1-0

Box Score

CLINTON TWP., Mich.- Senior Tom Oatley's strike in the 83rd minute broke a scoreless tie and gave Western Michigan (5-5-0) a 1-0 victory over Detroit on Sept. 30.

Oatley netted his team-leading third goal of the season at the 82:29, redirecting a pass from fellow classmate Terry Dowding past UDM's Bryan Kloss. The game-winner was his first of the season and eighth of his career, which made him Western Michigan's all-time leader in game-winning goals. Oatley entered the 2007 season tied with Dan Edwards at seven game-winners.

Freshman A.J. Reed made his first collegiate start in goal, earning his second win and first shutout. He totaled two saves. It was the second blanking of an opponent for the Brown & Gold as Reed and Casey Aubil combined for a 2-0 shutout over Canisius on Sept. 21.

Detroit (4-4-2) actually out-shot Western Michigan, 16-13, but the Broncos held the advantage when it came to shots on goal, 5-2.

WMU will play its third-straight road game next week, facing its first Mid-American Conference opponent in Northern Illinois on Friday, Oct. 5. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. EST.
