GREEN BAY, Wis.- The Western Michigan men's soccer team suffered a 4-0 setback at the hands of UW-Green Bay on Sunday, Sept. 23.
Playing their third game in five days, the Broncos (4-5-0) trailed by just one goal at halftime, but had trouble stopping the Phoenix in the second period. Green Bay's J.C. Banks scored a pair of goals in less than two minutes' time, breaking open the game early in the latter half.
Western Michigan played fairly even with Green Bay for the first 45 minutes, ripping off 10 shots compared to the Phoenix's 11. The Broncos would only produce four in the second half, however, while UWGB again fired 11 more.
Green Bay (4-2-2) opened the scoring in the 10th minute, on a long hard shot from the right side. The second goal came in the 59th minute, as the Phoenix goalie punt was flicked on and Banks finished. Banks struck again in the 60th minute, beating WMU goalkeeper Casey Aubil on his right side from 15 yards out. UWGB capped the day with a fourth goal in the 83rd minute, scoring on a header off a cross.
Aubil logged 59 minutes and 30 seconds in goal, making four saves before being replaced by freshman netminder A.J. Reed, who finished the contest. Reed was credited with two saves.
Senior Terry Dowding led the Broncos offensively, taking three shots and placing all three on goal. Sophomore Shaun Clements also took three shots, while redshirt freshman Andrew Gasiorek came off the bench to fire two.
Western Michigan will have a full week to regroup, with its next match scheduled at Detroit on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 1 p.m.
