KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan men's soccer team (4-4-0) shut out the Canisius Golden Griffins, 2-0, Friday afternoon in front of 186 fans at the WMU Soccer Complex.
Junior Jordan Fylonenko scored the game-winning goal in the 57th minute. Charlie Watts found Tom Oatley, who made a long run down the right side. Oatley fed the ball to Fylonenko in the middle of the box, who beat the keeper on the left side for his second goal of the season.
Western Michigan added to its 1-0 lead in the 71st minute when Shaun Clements threaded a ball to Oatley, who maneuvered through the midfield and fired a shot from the right corner of the box, beating the keeper again left side, extending the Bronco advantage, 2-0. The goal would give Oatley three points on the day and his second goal of the season.
Both teams changed goalies to start the second half. The Broncos replaced starting goalie Casey Aubil with freshman A.J. Reed and the Golden Griffins (1-4-0) sent out Matt Wopperer for Adam Catley. Reed finished the game with five saves, earning his first career win and the first WMU shutout on the season.
"That was a lot of fun," said WMU head coach Chris Karwoski. "It is certainly better to win, win at home, and get the shutout. The big thing was, it was a shutout, and we hadn't had one of those all season. Scoring more than one goal is also huge."
The Broncos kept Canisius on the defensive side for most of the first half. WMU had two great scoring chances in the opening period, the first coming in the 29th minute, when Terry Dowding took a shot from the left side of the box and it clanked off the right post. In the 38th minute, redshirt freshman midfielder Andrew Gasiorek found Oatley through the midfield, but his left-footed breakaway shot was stopped by Cately.
"I'm happy for the guys, they deserve it," Karwoski said. "Hopefully this will help the them, because we are facing a very very good Green Bay team coming off a huge year last year, and their team is pretty intact."
The Broncos will travel to Green Bay, Wis., to take UW-Green Bay on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m.
