Broncos Beat Miami to Advance in MAC Tournament

Box Score

CLEVELAND, Ohio? Western Michigan rolled over Miami, 74-58, in the opening game of the Kraft Mid-American Conference Tournament at Quicken Loans Arena on Sunday. The Broncos advance to play No. 1 West seed Ball State on Tuesday, at 1 p.m.

In a solid victory, WMU (14-17) led start to finish. Miami (12-18) tied the game once, 13-13, at 12:13 in the first half, but the day belonged to Carrie Moore and the Broncos.

Moore dumped in 34 points, hitting four three's, and became the MAC's all-time single-season scoring leader, surpassing Kim Knuth with 794 career points.

Moore was named the game's MVP. Lindsey Brown also had a big day, grabbing a career-high 19 rebounds, while chipping in 17 points. The Broncos out-rebounded the RedHawks, 46-29.

WMU held a 43-29 advantage at the half, and increased its lead to as much as 22 in the second half. Clicking on all cylinders, the Broncos shot 45 percent from the floor, and were almost perfect from the free-throw line, hitting 15-of-16.

The Broncos did the job on both sides of the ball, holding Miami to 40 percent shooting, and allowing just one three pointer. The RedHawks were just 1-for-14 from behind the arc.

The RedHawks' leading scorer, Amanda Jackson, who owned the third highest average in the conference at 17.7 points per game, was held to just two points before a hard foul took her out of the game in the second half.

The win for the Broncos was the first over Miami in the MAC Tournament in the last five tries, the first since 1988. It also broke a two-year trend for WMU of exiting the tournament in the first round.

Tiera DeLaHoussaye added eight points for the Brown & Gold and paced the offense with seven assists. Returning to the lineup after being sidelined the last two games of the regular season with a sore back, Amanda Parker came off the bench to contribute five points and six rebounds.
