BUFFALO, N.Y.- The Western Michigan (9-15, 2-8 MAC) women's basketball team dug an early hole and couldn't find a way out, falling to University at Buffalo at Alumni Arena, 61-48, on Feb. 7.
The cold weather in Buffalo matched the icy reception WMU was greeted with in its second-straight MAC loss on the road. UB (7-15, 2-8 MAC) scored on the opening tip and kept rolling, snapping a five-game losing streak.
Tiera DeLaHoussaye led the Broncos with her first career double-double, recording 10 points and 10 rebounds. She also added five assists. Jenny Loney chipped in a career-high eight points, netting WMU's only two three-pointers of the night.
Faced with relentless double-teams and traps throughout the game, Carrie Moore, the nation's leading scorer, was held to nine points and eight rebounds. It was the first time in the last 13 games Moore was unable to score double figures.
Falling behind 20-4 in the first 10 minutes, and trailing 32-19 at the half, the Broncos inched within one point late in the second period, but never held a lead in the game. The Broncos committed 21 turnovers on the evening, 13 of those coming in the first half.
Trailing 40-28 at the 11:56 mark, the Brown and Gold was able to spark a second-half run. Coming off the bench, Michelle DeNooyer fueled the rally, as she briefly gave WMU a defensive presence down low, while scoring three points. The Broncos went on to ring up 11 unanswered points, and pulled to within one, 40-39, with seven minutes remaining.
Just as it looked as though the Broncos might pull ahead, costly mistakes enabled UB to steal back the show. The Bulls went on a 9-0 run over the next two minutes, once again pushing the lead to 10. WMU wouldn't be able to come back from the deficit, and ultimately fell by a 61-48 final.
Buffalo's Heather Turner was the game's leading scorer, also notching a double-double, tallying 15 points and 15 rebounds. Three other players reached double figures for the Bulls.
Both teams shot under 38 percent on the evening.
Western Michigan will look to rebound on Saturday against Miami, as the Broncos kick off a three-game homestand. Game time against the RedHawks is set for 2 p.m.
