TOLEDO, Ohio? In a game of runs, it was Toledo that made the last one, beating Western Michigan, 74-66, Wednesday night at Savage Hall. The Broncos conclude the regular season 13-17 overall, 6-10 in the MAC.
With the loss, WMU earns the fifth seed in the West Division for the upcoming Mid-American Conference Tournament, and will face Miami ? the fourth seeded East Division team. The two will square off in the opening game of the tournament at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland on March 4, at 1 p.m.
In a back and forth battle, WMU led the Rockets by one point at halftime, 33-32. The game featured 10 lead changes, but it was Toledo who would hold on to the last one.
With the Broncos trailing by one, 61-60, with 4:23 remaining, the Rockets put together a 9-0 run over the next three and a half minutes to jump ahead 70-60. The Brown & Gold continued to fight in the last minute, but Toledo (10-18, 6-10 MAC) hung on for the 74-66 win.
Carrie Moore was the game's leading scorer with 29 points, adding six rebounds. Although official NCAA statistics will not be released later this week, Moore will likely end the regular season as the nation's leading scorer, finishing with a 25.3 average ? becoming the first player ever from the MAC to do so.
Lindsey Brown finished the night tallying her ninth double-double of the year with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Tiera DeLaHoussaye was just shy of a double-double, with 10 assists and nine rebounds, but was held to just two points. Molly Dwyer hit three three-pointers on her way to nine points.
Nine different players scored for the Rockets, and three reached double figures, led by Danielle Bishop's 16 points.
