Broncos Fall to Falcons 3-2 in Overtime

Box Score

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan hockey team fell to Bowling Green, 3-2, in overtime on Friday night in front of 2,695 fans at Lawson Ice Arena

A slashing call on WMU (2-3-0, 0-1-0 CCHA) junior defensemen Chris Frank at 1:32 mark of the overtime period proved to be costly for the Broncos. Bowling Green (2-2-0, 1-1-0 CCHA) won the ensuing face off in the Bronco zone, senior Falcon defensemen Mike Nesdill found freshman center James Perkin who fired it on net. WMU goalie Riley Gill was unable to control the rebound and freshman winger David Solway was there to clean up and put the puck into the net for the first goal of his career, giving BGSU the win 3-2 in overtime.

"It was a disappointing loss," said head coach Jim Culhane. "It was the home opener in league play, and we really wanted come out with a win. Bowling Green kept coming and they played real hard and were able to generate some chances down low."

The Broncos started the game out slowly and were out shot 10-0 at one point by BGSU. That all changed during a late power play off of a obstruction-hooking call on Jacob Cepis. Junior Patrick Galivan fired a shot on net that was saved by Falcon goaltender Nick Eno. Senior Jeff Pierce collected rebound, skated behind goal and centered it to sophomore Cam Watson who had an open net and fired it top shelf for his second goal of the season. Galivan earned his fourth assist on the play and Pierce picked up his first helper on the season.

Bowling Green tied things up 1-1 midway through the second period when sophomore Tomas Petruska grabbed a loose puck behind the crease and tried to center it for on oncoming BGSU winger but the puck went off Gill's skate and into the net. The unassisted goal at 12:34 was the first of the season for Petruska.

WMU took the lead 2-1 8:48 into the third period when sophomore defensemen Kevin O'Connor and Galivan found freshman center Max Campbell. Campbell and a clear shot to the net and beat Eno over his right shoulder for his second goal of the season. Galivan picked up his second assist on the night and fifth of the seaon and O'Connor picked up his first assist of the season for the Broncos.

Bowling Green squared the game 2-2, eventually sending it to overtime, when Solway fired a shot on net and Nesdil was there to put in the rebound at the 17:45 mark in the third period. The goal was Nesdill's first of the season and the assist was the first of Solway's career, with junior winger Brandon Svendsen earning his second helper of the season.

Gill finished the game with 27 saves for the Broncos and Eno had 14 saves for the Falcons.

The Brown & Gold now head to Bowling Green Saturday, Nov. 3, to finish off the weekend home-and-home series. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
