KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Patrick Galivan picked up his league leading 11th assist but the Western Michigan hockey team fell to Notre Dame, 5-1, in front of 4,224 fans at Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday night. The Broncos struck first, but Notre Dame scored five unanswered goals to put the game away.
WMU (3-7-0, 1-5-0 CCHA) drew first blood 1:32 into the game when Max Campbell deflected a shot from Steve Silver into the net, beating Notre Dame (9-4-0, 7-2-0) goaltender Jordan Pearce (8-4-0) on his stick side. The goal was Campbell's third on the season and Silver picked up his first assist of the season. Galivan earned his Central Collegiate Hockey Association leading 11th assist on the play.
Later in the first period the Broncos had another chance when Jeff Pierce thought he scored on a long lob from Mike Lesperance and a short pass from Brian Bicek. The play was reviewed and it was ruled that the goalie had trapped the puck with his glove and it did not go over the line and no goal was awarded.
"It is disapointing for us as team, " said head coach Jim Culhane. "We had a wonderful crowd here tonight and I thought we got out to a great start. We felt a little momentum swing when our potentially second goal was reviewed and overturned."
Notre Dame would square the score at one 12:10 into the first period on an even-strength goal by Calle Ridderwall, the first of his career. Ian Cole earned his fourth assist on the season for the Fighting Irish. The UND defense held the Broncos to just four shots on goal, while firing 14 shots on net. WMU netminder Riley Gill (3-4-0) had 12 of his 27 saves in the first period.
Justin White added the game winning goal with 2:29 remaining in the first period. After a faceoff deep in the Bronco zone, the puck was stuck in the middle of the far point, it came loose and slid to White who put it in for his first goal of the season to give the Irish the lead, 2-1.
Notre Dame would extend their lead, 3-1, on an even-strength goal by Dan Kissel 8:11 into the second period. Evan Rankin would pick up his second assist on the season on the Irish goal. Notre Dame would further extend their lead when Ryan Thang scored his seventh goal on the season on a power-play with 11-seconds remaining in the second period to put the Irish up, 4-1.
The Broncos were only able to manage two shots on net in the third period and Erik Condra would add the final goal of the game when he intercepted the puck deep in the Bronco zone. Condra waited for Gill to make the first move and Gill dove in anticipation of the shot, but Condra went top-shelf to beat him and put the Irish up 5-1.The short-handed goal came 7:55 into the third period and was the sixth goal on the season for Condra.
