BOWLING GREEN, Ohio- The Western Michigan men's soccer team (7-9-1, 0-3-1 MAC) fell in its second straight road contest this week, dropping a 4-1 decision at Bowling Green. Junior Jordan Fylonenko scored his second goal in as many games for the Broncos.
“Obviously, this was not the outcome we were hoping for,” WMU head coach Chris Karwoski said. “With just one point in the conference standings, and facing a very good Akron team next week, our postseason chances don't look very good.”
The Falcons (5-9-3, 1-2-1 MAC), who came into Saturday's game with a conference-low 14 goals, had a breakout game offensively, rattling off four straight goals before the Broncos got on the board late in the game. Bowling Green netted two goals in each half.
Sandy Abiola opened the scoring for BGSU, striking in the 28th minute. Chuko Evwaraye made it a 2-0 game less than 10 minutes later, heading in a ball from six yards out. Cameron Hepple pushed the score to 3-0 after the halftime break, finishing a corner kick in the 53rd minute. Bowling Green's final goal would come courtesy of Hunter Van Houten in the 57th minute, bouncing a ball in off the post.
Fylonenko finally broke the scoring drought for Western Michigan in the 80th minute, finding the back of the net from the top right corner of the box for his fourth goal of the season. Sophomore Tyler Rosenhagen notched the assist, his fourth of the year.
Freshman A.J. Reed (2-2-0) made his first appearance in six games in goal for WMU, last seeing action on Oct. 5, at Northern Illinois. The Broncos were out-shot by the Falcons, 18-11,with Reed making five stops. Rosenhagen led the team with four shots, putting two on goal.
Western Michigan will look to finish the regular season on a winning note, hosting Akron on Saturday, Nov. 3 (2 p.m.). The Broncos will honor their five seniors, Terry Dowding, Kyle Hall, Mark Kroeger, Tom Oatley and Mark Wojcicki prior to the game, as well as celebrate TKO Youth Club Day.
