KALAMAZOO, Mich. ? The Western Michigan men's soccer team defeated the Bradley Braves, 2-1, in a non-conference matchup at the WMU soccer complex on Sunday afternoon in front of 120 fans.
Senior Tom Oatley and freshman C.J. Brown provided the firepower for the Broncos (7-7-0, 0-2-0 MAC). Brown scored the first goal of the game in the eight minute. Sophomore Tyler Rosenhagen found Oatley, who made a run deep into the left corner. Oatley fired a cross to Brown, who handled it off his chest and kicked past BU (6-4-2, 0-0-1 MVC) goalie Mike Haynes for the 1-0 Bronco lead. The goal was Brown's third on the season and Oatley earned his third assist, with Rosenhagen earning his second helper on the year.
Bradley struck back in the 17th minute when Rudy Garcia took a corner kick for the Braves. Garcia's kick was cleared by a Bronco defender, but was passed back into the box by Paul Tracy. Tracy found Drew DeGurian in the box who fired the ball into the net to knot the score up 1-1.
In the 27th minute, Rosenhagen went on a run down the right side and fired a shot in on net. Haynes made the save, but was unable to control it. The ball came free and Oatley was there to clean it up and put it in the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season, and ninth game-winning goal of his career. Oatley had previously broken the record for game-winning goals in a season on Sept. 30, in 1-0 win at Detroit. The assist was Rosenhagen's second of the game and third on the season.
The Bronco defense picked it up in the second half, only allowing one shot on goal. Bradley had a few chances late, one being on a pivotal corner kick in the 87th minute. Garcia fired the ball in from the corner but it was cleared out junior midfielder Jordan Fylonenko. A minute later Bradley had a thrown near the corner that was cleared out by sophomore midfielder Shaun Clements. Bradley had another thrown in the same area, but it was once again cleared out by the Broncos, this time by freshman midfielder Jordan Miller.
Sophomore goaltender Casey Aubil stopped four-of-five shots on goal and improved his record on the season to 4-6-0.
The Broncos now travel to Oneonta, N.Y. to take on Hartwick on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 3 p.m.
