BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Western Michigan began the new year on the short end of a 5-1 loss to Bowling Green in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association contest played before a FSN Detroit viewing audience Friday night. The loss was WMU's fifth straight. The Broncos are 6-11-1 overall, 5-8-1 in league play.
WMU's Chris Clackson provided the game's first goal on the power play at 8:13 of the first period. Jeff LoVecchio and Nathan Ansell assisted on the play.
BG (5-15-1/3-10-0 CCHA) answered with five straight goals -- including three in the third period. BG's leading scorer Jonathan Matsumoto scored a goal and assisted on another while freshman Kai Kantola registered three assists.
"Give Bowling Green credit, they blocked a lot of shots tonight and capitalized on their opportunities," said WMU coach Jim Culhane, whose team was outshot, 35-19. "We didn't win enough loose pucks or battles in the corners."
The teams met again tomorrow night in a 7:05 p.m. faceoff from the BGSU Arena.
