Box Score

ATHENS, Ohio- The Western Michigan women's basketball team (8-12, 1-5 MAC) snapped a five-game losing streak and earned their first Mid-American Conference victory, beating Ohio, 71-55, in Athens.

Carrie Moore scored a game-high 31 points, her seventh 30-plus point total of the season. Ohio native Sara Vest also had a big day, leading the Broncos with 11 rebounds, while recording eight points and two blocks. Tiera DeLaHoussaye rattled off 11 points, seven assists and five rebounds and Nicole Watkins chipped in eight points and four boards.

In one of the Broncos' most complete defensive efforts of the year, Western Michigan held Ohio to just 25 percent shooting, and did not allow a three pointer until less than five minutes remaining in the game.

The Broncos were aggressive on both ends of the ball, building a 12-point first-half advantage, 36-24. Eighteen of Moore's points came in the first period, while Vest and Watkins each recorded six, as the three combined for all but six of the team's first-half points.

The game started off slow, and was tied at just eight points apiece with 12:13 to go in the first period. WMU took the lead for good, 10-8, on a DeLaHoussaye jumper with 11:24 remaining in the half. The Broncos proceeded to out-score Ohio, 26-16, over the next 10 minutes, taking the 12-point lead into the locker room.

WMU continued its assault in the second half, and had extended the lead to 21 with 10:49 left in the game.

The Brown and Gold dominated in the paint and on the boards, out-rebounding Ohio, 47-41, and outscoring the Bobcats down low, 28-16. WMU shot 39.6 percent on the day.

Ohio was paced by Domenica Silva with 15 points. Rachel Fredrick led the game with 16 rebounds.

Western Michigan returns to Kalamazoo for a two-game homestand next week. The Broncos welcome #18 Bowling Green on Wednesday, at 7 p.m., before hosting Akron on Saturday, at 2 p.m.
