KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan women's basketball team (7-12, 0-5 MAC) fell short against Toledo (6-12, 2-4 MAC), 76-72, Wednesday night at University Arena.
Tiera DeLaHoussaye recorded 19 points, seven assists and six steals to lead the Broncos. Lindsey Brown scored 18 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and Carrie Moore posted 17 points. Amanda Parker connected on 3-of-4 three point attempts in the second half to chip in nine points.
The Broncos trailed by 15 points at halftime, after hot shooting by Toledo from beyond the three-point arc. The Rockets connected on 6-of-12 long-ball attempts and out-rebounded the Broncos, 24-15, also picking up easy second-chance points in the paint. The second half proved to be much different.
Nicole Watkins knocked down the first three-pointer of the game for the Broncos to start the second half, but Toledo answered with back-to-back lay ups to silence the crowd and increase its lead to 16 points, 44-28.
Western Michigan continued to chip away at the Rockets' lead and went on a five-minute 9-2 run, off a free throw by Moore and back-to-back post jump shots by Brown, that brought the Brown & Gold back to within nine, 46-37.
The Broncos edged within four, 53-49, at the 7:50 mark, but the Rockets rattled off a 14-6 run to push the lead back to nine, 67-58, with just over three minutes left. The Brown & Gold would not go away, and again put together a rally of its own.
Parker knocked down the fifth three-pointer of the second half for the Broncos, and Moore sank two free throws to cap off a 7-0 run to bring the Broncos within two, 67-65, with 1:23 left.
Things got interesting over the next minute, and WMU trailed by just a bucket, 72-70, with 22 seconds remaining. Toledo's Allie Clifton went to the free-throw line and missed the second of a pair of free throws, keeping the contest at a one-possession game, but the ball bounced into UT's Savannah Werner arms. The Broncos commited a quick foul, sending Danielle Bishop to the charity stripe. Bishop hit both, and put Toledo ahead by four, 74-70, with 13 seconds left. DeLaHoussaye went the length of the floor to hit a lay up with seven seconds on the clock, cutting the deficit to two, 74-72. The Broncos immediately fouled after the in-bounds pass, sending Bishop back to the line. She again hit both, securing the 76-72 win in Toledo's favor.
Bishop paced Toledo with a game-high 24 points, connecting on 14-of-17 free throw attempts, nine of which came in the final minute of play. Werner recorded 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Broncos take to the road for their next game against the Mid-American Conference East Division Ohio Bobcats on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m.
