KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan received a pair of goals from Jeff LoVecchio and Mark Letestu to hand sixth-ranked Miami a 5-3 loss in Central Collegiate Hockey Association action from Lawson Arena.
In a plot similar to Friday's contest -- won by Miami, 5-3 -- Saturday's affair was tied 2-2 after two periods. This time it was the Broncos who struck for three goals in the final 20 minutes as Jeff Pierce notched the game winner with 4:49 left in regulation. Letestu scored on an empty net with three seconds left to earn Perani Cup No. 1 Star honors. LoVecchio, meanwhile, now has 14 points (7 goals, 7 assists) in his last eight games.
"I thought we rebounded well from last night's game and played well down the stretch when it counted," said WMU coach Jim Culhane. "It was a hard-fought game on both sides and this was an important two points for us to get at home."
The Broncos went 1-for-10 on the power play, but converted late in the third on a five-minute opportunity when a RedHawk was called for a hitting from behind major.
Miami (17-8-1/12-5-1 CCHA) scored all its goals on the man-advantage, highlighted by Nathan Davis' 16th tally of the season.
WMU (8-12-1/7-9-1 CCHA) continues its home stand next weekend (Jan. 19-20), playing host to Notre Dame.
