KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan women's basketball team (7-10, 0-3 MAC) fell to Eastern Michigan (8-6, 3-0 MAC), 79-58, Wednesday night at University Arena.
Carrie Moore recorded her second double-double of the season with 29 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Broncos. Tiera DeLaHoussaye chipped in eight points and five assists.
Eastern Michigan connected on 9-of-20 three-point attempts and shot over 44 percent, while the Broncos had trouble finding the bottom of the basket, shooting just 28.4 percent on the evening. It was the first home loss for WMU this season.
EMU opened the first five minutes with a 14-4 run behind eight-straight points from reigning MAC West Player of the Week Sarah VanMetre. The Eagles took advantage of WMU mistakes, scoring 14 points off turnovers, and pushed their lead to 15, 23-8, with 10:16 remaining in the first period.
With 9:56 left in the half, Moore connected on her first points of the game and heated up to score 12 of the Broncos' final 21 points of the period. The Eagles' lead slowly dissipated, and the Brown and Gold went on an 11-3 run in the final six minutes to pull within four at the break, 33-29.
The second half started much like the first, with the Eagles again rattling off a 14-4 run to go ahead, 47-33. EMU stayed hot for the remainder of the night, connecting on six three-pointers in the half. Western Michigan's offense struggled to find a rhythm, and the Eagles went on to win, 79-58.
Three players scored double figures for Eastern Michigan, led by VanMetre's 27 points and nine rebounds.
In search of their first conference win, the Broncos travel to DeKalb, Ill., to take on Northern Illinois on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 3 p.m.
