CLEVELAND -- Western Michigan earned its first victory with a 1-0 triumph over Cleveland State in non-conference action from Krenzler Field.
Junior Terry Dowding notched the first game-winning goal of his career, scoring with 12 minutes left in the match. Dowding made a run near the far post and slid in the box to redirect a pass from Tom Oatley.
Redshirt freshman Casey Aubil need just one save to notch his first shutout.
"There is a tremendous weight off our shoulders, getting this first win," said WMU coach Chris Karwoski. "Dowding did a great job coming off the bench and Greg Shepka and Mark Kroeger were outstanding in the back for us. We won this game in strong fashion and hopefully it's a sign of good things to come."
The Vikings' home field has been kind to Karwoski, who won his WMU coaching debut there in 1998 and is unbeaten in three visits (2-0-1).
WMU (1-3-0) concludes a five-game road trip this Friday (Sept. 8), traveling to Valparaiso for a 4:30 p.m. start.
