KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- In a reversal of fortunes, Western Michigan surrendered a goal with 26 seconds left in regulation in a 2-1 loss to Oakland at the WMU Soccer Complex. Just 12 days ago, WMU scored with 36 seconds left in the game to defeat IUPUI by the same score.
Oakland's Stefan St. Louis knocked in a rebound at 89:34, as WMU lost for just the third time in 18 home games.
"The guys played hard and really scrapped, but the bottom line is we're not finishing our chances," said coach Chris Karwoski. "Casey (Aubil) made some great saves to keep us in the game."
Aubil returned to the field after missing Sunday's game against Western Illinois and the second half of the Loyola contest due to an injury. The redshirt freshman finished with seven saves as the Golden Grizzlies built a 19-9 edge in total shots.
Terry Dowding added to his career-best season totals with his team-leading fourth marker of the year, burying a free kick from 25 yards out in the first half to knot the game at 1-1. A junior forward, Dowding had one goal over the past two seasons.
"When we brought Terry in, we felt he could be this kind of goal-scoring forward for us," added Karwoski.
WMU (2-7-0) will face a stiff test this Friday when it opens Mid-American Conference play against 16th-ranked Akron in the Rubber City.
