Opening: Mat Kanan spoke to the press, Introduced Coach Cubit and the Team Captains.
Coach Bill Cubit's Opening Speech: Well at least I get one clap from the family back there. To get started let me give you a little bit about where we have been since we went 7-4. We have a heck of a recruiting class coming in; it has really shown itself out in the field. We have some pretty good players coming in. Winter conditioning went great, spring conditioning did not have many injuries and we have some guys back there, of course summer we can't monitor that, but from what these guys have been saying it went fantastic. Our guys came back in outstanding shape thanks to Nate Peoples, he is as important to this program as the coaching staff if not more because he gets these guys ready to go, he has done an unbelievable job.
First two days we went out there in our shorts and helmets to get our systems in place. Today will be the last of the five days, we have to try to get all of our offense in, defense in, after today we probably have about 95% of our offense, defense and special teams which is a big plus because you can do a lot of meetings. Starting tomorrow is where we separate the guys who can retain it and the guys who can go out there and physically do it. We are looking forward to the next week.
Our schedule is challenging to say the least, but we are excited about it. I am excited about the schedule, we play Indiana (a Big ten school) to open it up. We play Toledo on the first home game on CommUniverCity night, going to Virginia which is a team in a little bit of transition right now, that has done a great job and are an outstanding football team. Temple will come here, and then we get into the MAC schools.
The West Division I think is challenging to say the least, there are great football teams and on the other side we play three of the top four teams. At the very end we play Florida State at their place.
Really enthused about our kids, I can't say enough about what they have done to help turnaround this football team and on campus. The team has given over 1850 hours of community service in the last year half, we have 34 guys this past semester who hit a 3.0, there doing the right thing and hopefully it will carry over into the field.
At defense/defensive back we have got some experience with some sophomores and of course Jimmie Vincent is the only senior back, we have Louis Delmas that has moved over to safety and it has really fit him better and fits the defense better. Delmas will be paired with C.J Wilson who I think is going to come into his own, he is going to be a fantastic football player. On the corners we have Londen Fryer, who has been moved over from wide-out to give some depth in that position. Jimmie Vincent will be moving to a lot of different spots, playing a lot of football for us and it takes a veteran to do all that, and that is why Jimmie is so valuable to this football team. Andy Dorcely and David Coleman, to young freshmen, will not be red-shirted. At linebacker we have some experience there and are looking to upgrade that position. We have Ameer Ismail and in the middle we have Dustin Duclo and Paul Tithof, we're talking about putting those two guys in and rotate there because of how physical it is in there for 35- 40 plays for each of them to keep them healthy all the way through. Greg Marshall will be our Sam, Cornelius Robinson is a guy who has not played a lot of football here but has the potential to be a really good football player. Also we have Austin Pritchard and Nick Saad who have experience. We also have freshman Anthony Williams, who has a chance to be a really good football player given a little bit of time.
At defensive end we start off with Anthony Belmonte, Zach Davidson and Matt Ludeman, three who have a lot of experience and two of which are seniors. We don't have a lot of seniors on the team, just nine so we are still a really young team. We are hoping that Kevin Smith can also go in and help us out in that position.
Offensive line wise we feel really good about that, Dominic Moran has been moved in as guard, which has been great for us. We have guys that have experience on the inside which is good, because they can make all the line calls. The left tackle is Rob Johnson a walk-on and to be perfectly honest with you last year if you told me he was starting, I would not have believed you. He has come light years since last year. At right tackle are James Blair and Andy Laue, who are fighting it out on the other side. We also have a host of other guys who can fill in there and get some pretty big looks. At quarterback, we are real fortunate to have Ryan back and the reason is that it was key to have him during the summer. He ran the show because he knows the plays just about as good as the coaching staff. Ryan was able to help out the new guys and there is just a presence when he is out there, which is a big plus for us. Thomas Peregrin is a JC transfer, who last semester had a 3.3 GPA. It will take some time, but he does have talent. Caleb Clark is our next QB; he is from Canada so it has taken him some time to understand the new system. Tim Hiller still has the knee injury; he throws the ball but does not participate in any contact drills. It works out well because it gives him a chance to get stronger, get his motion better and understand the system a little bit better.
At kicking we have Nate Meyer who is one of the better kickers in the league. He had a good year last season and hopefully he continues that. Jim Laney and Mike Jones are our punters. As a coaching staff we feel great about the team. We have picked up three new guys, Chris Tabor who is our running backs coach. I was really fortunate after Brian Rock left; he called me about the position. He has been at Utah State, and was at Missouri with me so he understands the system and has been in the system. Tabor will also be working with our special teams, and there is a big difference on our special teams mentality right now. Clayton White, who took Paul Williams' spot, is also doing some special teams and is doing an outstanding job. The last newcomer is Tim Dauost. He is a fairly young coach, but he is one of the finest technicians that I have seen coach that position.
What to look forward to is us playing hard and were going to go at it 100 miles per hour and whatever happens, happens. We are going to make some mistakes, we understand that. You know we can talk about experience, but sophomores are not exactly what you're looking for to say you have a lot of experience. At quarterback, we do have a lot of experience there. These guys (captains) have done an absolute fantastic job, they are what you want and I am blessed to be around this group of people.
