OXFORD, Ohio (March 11) -- Western Michigan saw its 2005-06 campaign come to an end with a 5-4 overtime loss to second-ranked Miami in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association Tournament Quarterfinal contest held at Goggin Arena. The No. 1 seeded RedHawks swept the best-of-three game series.
Alec Martinez scored at the 17:00 mark of overtime on a slapshot that found its way through traffic in front of the net. Martinez finished with three goals on the weekend after going scoreless during the season.
“It was a quality effort, the team has a lot to be proud of,” said WMU coach Jim Culhane. “I couldn't have asked for more, it was a great run for us in the playoffs.”
In a game that featured four lead changes, WMU received a career-night from senior forward Daryl Moore, who had three points, including a pair of goals in the first period to earn Perani Cup No. 3 Star honors. Fellow senior Brent Walton notched a point as well, finishing his career as the program's 17th-leading scorer with 156 points in 154 consecutive games played.
Mike Erickson (9th) and Reid Yantzi (3rd) also scored for the Broncos, as all four seniors in the lineup registered points in their final games. The contest also marked the last game for the 30-year-old Goggin Arena, as Miami moves into a new home next year.
The Broncos finished with a 10-24-6 overall record.
