KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Feb. 11) Jason Moul's overtime goal propelled Western Michigan to a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Bemidji State in a non-conference action from Lawson Arena. The teams split their weekend series.
Moul's wrist shot from the lower faceoff circle was deflected before fluttering past goaltender Layne Sedevie at the 1:37 mark. The victory snapped WMU's five-game losing streak while also giving the Broncos their first non-league win of the season.
WMU (7-21-4) rallied from three separate deficits. Ryan Mahrle's goal with 3:46 left in regulation -- assisted by Moul -- tied the contest at 4-4 after Tyler Scofield scored earlier in the period.
BSU (14-11-3) built a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes on goals from Shane Holman and Matt Pope.
Holman scored again in the second period, but the stanza belonged to the Broncos, who struck for three power play goals on tallies from Brent Walton, Mike Erickson and Dave Krisky. Walton's 22nd goal of the season marked a career-high.
"Jason (Moul) is pretty deserving of that game-winning goal. He has played hard for us all year and is a tremendous worker," said WMU coach Jim Culhane. "We got down, but did a good job of battling back tonight."
WMU travels to Alaska Fairbanks (Feb. 17-18) next week.
