Brown Sparks Bronco Victory Over Maryland-Eastern Shore

Box Score

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan women's basketball team (7-7) came from behind to down Maryland-Eastern Shore (4-8), 66-62, Saturday afternoon at University Arena in the final non-conference game of the regular season.

In a game that featured 12 lead changes and the Broncos on the wrong end of a 33-31 halftime score, WMU battled back in the second half, behind the play of it's senior class.

Lindsey Brown shot 10-for-11 from the field, grabbed nine rebounds, and tied a season-high with 24 points to lead the Broncos. Carrie Moore contributed 20 points, 16 of which came in the second half.

With Brown on the bench with four personal fouls, Western Michigan trailed 46-40 with 11 minutes left in the game. Returning to the floor with 10:30 remaining, Brown wasted no time making her presence felt. The Broncos proceeded to go on a 10-2 run, taking a 50-47 lead, with Brown scoring eight of those points.

UMES wouldn't go away quietly, and knotted the score at 53 points apiece, but Moore sank the first and only three-pointer of the game for the Broncos to give WMU a three-point lead. Going on a 7-2 run, Western Michigan opened a 60-55 advantage with 2:45 left in the contest.

With just under a minute remaining, Moore sank 1-of-2 at the charity strip to give WMU a 62-59 lead, but the Hawks' Qiana Cheatham connected on a three-pointer of her own with 34 seconds left, to once again tie the game. Returning to the offensive end of the floor, Moore went to the line again and sank both free throws, putting WMU on top for good, 64-62. Maryland-Eastern Shore's final attempt to tie the game sailed over the rim, and Brown sank two free throws to seal the 66-62 Bronco victory.

The Broncos begin Mid-American Conference play on the road Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. against West Division rival Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant.
